Fragments of the 7h long performance at Le Pressing Gallery, 30 November 2012

“Iwona created a video that records a performance in which she observed the gallery space from the street for seven hours—the average daily opening time of an exhibition space. This video is now projected in its entirety onto the window that was the very site of the action.

Through the mise en abyme created by this setup, the piece raises, in a vertiginous way, questions about the dynamics of looking within the exhibition space: who is looking at whom, and at what? It also reveals the performative nature of the gaze, as Iwona’s presence – reduced to the minimal act of looking – elicited a range of reactions such as curiosity, amusement, unease, and irritation.”

TWO PHASES of the work:
1) PERFORMANCE
2) VIDEO INSTALLATION:

Stage 1 : Performance duration: 10am-5pm, 30.11.2012
Standing on the street, watching the inside of the gallery through the window. A video camera is recording the performer from the opposite side of the same window. The camera lens is approximately at the eye level of the performer.

Stage 2 : Video Projection duration: 10.01 – 16.02.2013
The 7h performance is projected onto the glass of the window of the gallery, where the performance took place. It is a double sided projection which can be seen both from the inside and the outside of the gallery. The size of the projection corresponds with the size of the window frame.
