NIDO
2021
Participatory earth installation / artist residency
Co-created with Vide Terra and Idea Destroying Muros
Organized by Laboratorio Saperi Situati and
Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva, Palermo, Italy

Nido is a communal earth installation created during the 2021 Fare Nido artist residency at Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva in Palermo. Co-created with the transcultural art collective Idea Destroying Muros and Vide Terra, the project brought together artistic practice, natural building techniques and collective making.

The 2.5-metre earth dome was conceived as a place of gathering, shelter and return – a space for pausing, listening, sharing stories and being together. Its nest-like form evokes care, protection and the circular movement of leaving and coming back.

The structure was built collectively using the Superadobe technique and finished with traditional cocciopesto plaster made from natural materials. The construction process became part of the artwork itself: knowledge was shared through hands-on making, bringing together artists, researchers, local participants and the museum community.

Rather than treating earth simply as a building material, Nido approaches it as a medium for creating relationships – between people, place, material and memory.
